Happiness comes, When everything numbs

This morning at work, we had a virtual whiteboarding session that, in the end, didn't include a whiteboard. I also had a couple of meetings about processes during software failures. This recurring theme takes too much time (at work, and probably in these notes, too), but I managed to end my day before 6pm so we could take a train into the city to the theatre that, I think, is officially known as @sohoplace.

We've seen Brokeback Mountain and The Little Big Things here. It's a lovely theatre. Unlike when we came to The Little Big Things, we managed to find our seats quickly. We were seeing 'Heathers: The Musical'. Unlike the two previous productions we've seen here, which were 'in the round', this is a so-called 'thrust stage' where the audience sits on three sides. It's surprising how it changes the feel of the auditorium.

I'm glad we saw the film a few weeks ago. It gave more context to what I saw this evening. "Heathers: The Musical" is a dark comedy in the late 1980s. The story follows Veronica Sawyer, an American high school student who becomes part of the popular clique, 'the Heathers', led by the ruthless Heather Chandler. When Veronica meets the new student, J.D., she is drawn into his world of rebellion. J.D. turns violent, and I think Veronica's role is to find a way to stop him. All set to an energetic rock-infused score, including the title of this post which are lyrics from the only song I’d heard before seeing the show, ‘Freeze Your Brain’.

The theatrical version appears to have more humour than the film, but I don't know the movie well enough and, maybe, missed something. The performances were outstanding. Lewis Asquith, who is a regular at the Crazy Coqs sessions, is in the show, and it's great to see him in a full-blown musical.
