Sam’s Day Out III

We are still on Sunday!

After walking back up to meet Sam we headed back down to the car and set of for Trebetherick, a thirty minute drive west.
Parking in Daymer Bay car park Sam, Paddy and I set off tho walk to the church. It sits in the middle of the 10th hole of the golf course, its spire seeming to ‘grow’ out of the ground. The spire itself is askew, the ‘twist appearing more pronounced depending which side it’s viewed from.
Entering the churchyard through the lych gate the grave of Sir John Betjeman, the poet laureate from 1972 until 1984 is immediately to your right.
Sir John Betjeman (1906-1984), Poet Laureate from 1972 until his death, used to spend his childhood holidays at his father’s property in Trebetherick. As a result, he became particularly fond of North Cornwall and wrote several poems about St Enodoc and its surroundings (‘A Sunday Afternoon Service at St Enodoc’ / ‘Trebetherick’).

Most people travel to St Enodoc’s for the Betjeman grave, the quirky spire, the fact that the shifting sands on which it sits frequently alter the landscape or just for its beauty and tranquility but a slow walk around the cemetery showed three Commonwealth War Graves and the more poignant memorial to Firefighter Fleur Lombard.

The three of us headed back to the car and then onwards to Falmouth and home. Fish and chips for dinner, tired but happy, a great day.
