Counting my Blessings
After yesterday’s dreich weather, I was nicely surprised to find the sun with his hat on this morning. It turned out be a glorious day, a day when Orkney shows itself to best advantage, blue skies, blue lochs and a stillness in the sea as we Selkies waded into the briny in a mélange of bathing attire -2 bikinis , several rash suits and the rest in cozzies (the wearers of these have not yet been stung by the jelly fish lurking in the depths). The water was exceptionally clear and looking down it was at times like swimming through an underwater forest of seaweed.
It felt very homely to have a Selkie pop in for coffee except she brought her own drink because she was on a fasting day and had her own concoction with her in a flask . It could have been vodka for all I knew. We sat in the sun at the window overlooking the water . There was a lot of laughter as we chatted while getting hotter and hotter but we stayed the course until she had to leave to pick up her husband from the library. We were both very red in the face.
In the afternoon I made a very quick excursion to Kirkwall to hunter gather in Shearer’s and also make a hair appointment. It was disappointing to find Kirkwall with cloudy skies having left a blue sky in Stromness. Fortunately it was still there when I returned 2 hours later and to celebrate I bought an ice cream to eat in the garden. It was not a fasting day for me .
