At the Forbidden Spring ( Pancur Larangan)
Today, we walked the short distance from our hotel to Fort Canning Park and spent a fascinating few hours there. First, we stopped at the Forbidden Spring, the bathing place of ancient kings' consorts. Then we visited Fort Canning Centre, with a museum explaining the significance of the hill over centuries as a lookout and military base. We went down into the underground bunker, known as the Battlebox, which was the HQ of British forces (under Percival) in that area in WW2 until they surrendered to Japanese troops. It has been preserved as it was when 500 men at a time worked there- very atmospheric.
There are lovely gardens around the Fort now planted with specimen trees and shrubs used for spices, foods and fragrances such as Nutmeg, Tamarind, Ykang Ylang, Cocoa, and Cloves.
Then we took the underground train to look at the very modern Gardens on the Bay built on land reclaimed from the sea. Stunning new buildings to display the plants and new wetlands for wildlife have been created.
Late afternoon we returned to the hotel for a swim in the rooftop pool, before venturing out again for an authentic vegetarian South Indian meal in bustling Little India.
