Urban deer can be
a curse and a blessing - your
garden tells the tale
~carliewired
It was a slow start for me this morning. There had been some rain overnight and the sky was grey. I hoped if I waited a bit I might see some clearing. That plan seemed to be working when I left the house about 7:30.
I thought I would make a stop at the office to check the mailbox, then head off to Shuswap Road. I popped into the office and finished there. When I came back to my car, five deer had arrived in the yard.
Two does with three fawns were strolling through having a nibble here and there as they moved along. It doesn't matter much if they are browsing the weeds and the landscaping, but when they go for the garden produce I draw the line.
My daughter's friend has been using the raised beds near our office to grow some vegetables for herself. She lives in an apartment so this has been a work of love to drive over and tend her little garden. When the deer suddenly trespassed to the raised beds I got out of the car!!
These urban deer have an attitude. They gave me a look that said "Watcha gonna do about us!" and continued around the raised beds having a bite here and there.
I yelled. No response. I walked closer. No response. I drew up my arms and roared like a bear might.....that got their attention. They scurried off to the driveway and stopped to look back at me rather confused. I roared again and they kept moving.
Mission accomplished. I have wet socks but I have my blip for the day!
I collected my breakfast on the way home and was in by 8:30. I'm hoping for a quiet day with little distractions. Trevor has the weekend off.
