High Tide at Brancaster

Today was another very high tide of 9.2 meters, a bit less than the super high tide yesterday which was 9.5 meters. Gavin went off sailing and when the tide is that high it changes the harbour so that tender boats - used to row out to the sailing boats that are moored in the water - were not berthed on land but actually also bobbing about in the water. After breakfast I went down to the Staithe to see the boats but could not get very far as the tide had come right up over the car park.

Instead I walked along the board walk to Brancaster beach. The road to the beach was closed due to the high tide, but I walked on the higher sea defence wall and took this photo. The stakes mark the road which as you can see is totally under water, and the vast area of water looking like a lake is the flooded salt marsh that is usually a nesting ground for the birds. There were many people heading to the beach for a swim or returning from swimming - when it is low tide you cannot even see the sea as it is so far out, but with the high tides people take advantage of the deeper water for swimming.

After Gavin got back from sailing, we went to The Hero in Burnham Overy Staithe for Sunday lunch - they do an excellent roast lunch there. Then it was back home to tidy up, pack up and set off for home. The clear morning had turned overcast and there was some rain so we decided to go home rather than do another walk.

It was a lovely weekend, and we are now home again.
