Matera

A stunning town with ancient cave dwellings and a sad history. The poverty of Basilicata and the neighbouring provinces was ignored but after the end of the war, the families were forced to move out and the town abandoned.

Since 2019, when it was the City of culture and is recognised by UNESCO, it has become a popular tourist destination.

I first visited over 20 years ago, and it made an impression on me.

If anything, it’s even more magical today.
