Among the tall trees

A glorious day today, blue sky and sunshine. I checked the forecast at the weekend as the u3a Gardens Group was planning a visit to Ardkinglas Woodland Garden, on Loch Fyne, and it promised to be dry and warmer than usual. And it was!
 
Just five of us drove down to the garden, about an hour and a quarter away, stopping en route at the Tree Shop at Cairndow for lunch. The garden was showing a fair bit of autumn colour - my Blip today - and has an amazing collection of trees and shrubs, including many record breaking conifers. Until recently a Grand Fir, Abies grandis, was reckoned to be the tallest tree in Britain when it was climbed in 2010 and measured at 64.28m. The title changed hands several times in the last few years, but the tallest now is said to be a Douglas Fir in Reelig Glen Wood, west of Inverness. It’s also the tallest tree found in Northern Europe. Measured recently it is agreed to be 66.4m. Oh well, nothing last for ever and the Grand Fir is still an impressive tree! Difficult to get a picture of, but my attempt is today’s extra.
 
So much to see - I think I may go back again if we get some more good weather in a week or two!
