Last night of Blackadder, and there was the usual end of term silliness. Mainly subtle additions to props, designed not to be seen by the audience, but hopefully raise a smile from the actors. Having been doing this am-dram lark for many years, I am wise enough to check any prop I pick up very carefully before going on stage with it. And thus I found the fake spider in a box I have to open at one point. So, that wasn’t a surprise, but they did get me with a picture at the bottom of a bowl that is placed in front of me in a later episode.
These things work both ways though, and we actors came up with the idea of winding up the Director by subtly referencing a line that she had (rightly) insisted we change because it would not sit well with modern audiences.
Which line was it? I’m not going to say any more, the clues are in the photo.
