Whooper Swan
A grey and windy day but dry.
We went down to Broadsands in search of a lone Whooper Swan reported there for a few days. It was something to do and combine with a walk and coffee. The swan seemed to be moving between Broadsands and Elberry, the next cove. Jacqui was delighted to see it at Broadsands straightaway. It was on its own, and we watched from the cafe as it made its way to the far end of the beach, and back . It is no exaggeration to say that the official birdwatcher was thrilled. Later two Mute Swans appeared and they made their way to Elberry Cove. The Whooper Swan is on the right, similar in size to the Mute Swans but the Whooper Swan has a wedge of yellow on the bill. They breed in northerly latitudes, from Iceland, across Scandinavia, to Russia, and China. They migrate south for the winter. It is the National bird of Finland and features on one of their coins.
One or two other people had come to see it. Last saw one at Slimbridge.
On the beach there was a horse - see extra.
