John Hegley at Musicport festival, Whitby
I haven't seen much of Whitby because it took well over eight hours to get here! Something (masonry?) had fallen on to the train line near Cheltenham, and the track had to be inspected. This had the effect of ruining many people's plans, as Cheltenham connects to all of the main lines in the region.
Three trains, two buses later, I arrived in Whitby. The bus trip over the North York Moors from Scarborough was planned, because there are very few trains to Whitby, and the go via Middlesbrough. I hadn't planned for the mist and murk, though. Very atmospheric !
I tanked up the hill in Whitby to the guest house, because I was supposed to check in before 5pm. Found my attic room (the last set of stairs is very steep), unpacked, made tea, and lay down to recover!
About 7pm I walked out to the Pavilion, the entertainment venue on the West Cliff, for the festival. It took me a while to get my head around being indoors, and it hadn't fully kicked off, but when the first act came on, Rokia Kone, a female singer from Mali, the heat was on. I danced and soon forgot my travel troubles.
Downstairs, on the North Sea Stage, I saw poet John Hegley and Eleanor Moreton, a fabulous folk fiddler. I've seen John perform many times, but to be honest, tonight I preferred Eleanor. However, I was just happy to be there, and to be offered a seat.
Afterwards, I walked back through the silent street of the residential area to the attic room. I was too tired to stay for the act that started at 11.30 pm. I'm really looking forward to seeing Whitby, the pavilion and the beach in daylight! Also to meeting up with my sister K. again. And to the breakfast I've ordered for tomorrow.
