Grumpy Old Man

Bridges, poems and fireworks

This morning was the monthly u3a Oban meeting at the Corran Halls - I walked there and back with a friend. The speaker was L. Bruce Keith, a retired chartered surveyor and chartered environmentalist. He was speaking about his book ‘Bridgescapes: A personal journey through history celebrating Scotland's bridge-building heritage.’ It was planned as a millennium project, he said, but wasn’t actually finished and published until 2017!  An excellent talk, with many beautiful photographs by Lewis Matheson.

On the way back I spotted this intriguing figure in somebody's garden - thought it would make a good Blip!

This afternoon was our monthly u3a Poetry Group meeting. Only four members were there today, which is a lot fewer than usual. The theme was of course ‘Fireworks’ and we all read out our choices. Mine was ‘Fireworks’, by Amy Lowell - written before 1915, and with a very different use of the word! You can see it here - https://allpoetry.com/poem/14328143-Fireworks-by-Amy-Lowell
I’d also written a couple of limericks to match the theme  - oh go on then, here they are!

A young Welsh lad from Aberystwyth
Was geared up for November the fifth.
He filled up his pockets
With fireworks and rockets
And fell in the bonfire forthwith!

A firework supplier from Peel
Came up with a very good deal.
A pound in his pocket
Bought ten bangers, a rocket
And a sizeable Catherine wheel.
