Armistice Day
Early start to get over to the north coast, RAF St Mawgan, to attend the RAF’s ‘Hollow Square’ Remembrance Service. I felt very privileged to be the only non RAF Veteran invited to attend.
The service was preceded by a brief on the modern RAF and the future of RAF St Mawgan. Post parade we enjoyed bacon butties and coffee before heading off our separate ways.
I made my way back to Falmouth where the Royal Naval Association played a full part in Remembrance Events across the County. Branch Members attended ceremonies in Falmouth, Truro, Penryn, Helston, Newquay and RAF St Mawgan.
Commonwealth War Graves and memorials of the fallen were also remembered at Falmouth Cemetery, Mawnan Smith Cemetery, Veryan Cemetery, Mabe Cemetery, The St Nazaire Memorial and Falmouth Cemetery, “The Sons Of The Sea” memorial.
Poppy Crosses were also placed at the former service locations in and around Falmouth, the former Coastal Forces HQ (Membley Hall Hotel), the former Falmouth Military Hospital (Admiralty House opposite Trago Mills), the former Coastal Command HQ (Windjammer) and HMS Forte Four (Fish Strand Quay).
“We Remember All”
The afternoon was at at home before an evening call for help meant I was on my way out to Treliske Hospital to drop off.
Still there in the early hours as I write this.
