Running Standard

Dan was playing a gig tonight at 93 Feet East, so we decided a few weeks ago that we'd go and see him play, and then maybe hang around in London for a day or two.

In the end, we couldn't stay for the weekend, but we still came down to see Dan play.

I mentioned to Ash that we coming down and he said that he and Sal would come along, too, so the four of us arranged to meet for drinks and a curry before the gig.

Courtesy of Avanti, that ended up being a bit of a rush, and the Minx and I decided to take an Uber from the Pack and Carriage by Euston, where we were staying, to Brick Lane. No Ubers were forthcoming and in the end I opted for a black cab, despite my last few experiences of these being horrendously expensive.

When one pulled over, I asked how much to Brick Lane, and the guy said "Shall we call it twenty quid?" Well, yes!

He turned out to be a lovely chap, who chatted with us all the way, telling us about guests in his cab (Guy Garvey), being a vegan, trying to retire, and the cost of running a black cab. He was a lovely man, and we were happy to pay the full fare (which was only a few quid more, plus tip, anyway).

We got to The Pride Of Spitalfields in time to meet Dan for a drink. It was absolutely packed inside - and full credit to the calm and competent bar staff - but just mild enough to stand outside, where the three of us were joined by Ash and Sal.

When Dan went off to set up, we headed to Aladin* for our curry, which was excellent, and then proceeded to 93 Feet East.

There were four bands on, but - being as objective as possible - Dan's band, Running Standard, were the best. As Ash said, they were the only group that looked and played like a band.

I enjoyed it enormously, and I'm so glad we came along.
