Bert Arrives
The best laid plans and all that……. Daughter #1 and I had planned to meet as usual for our Saturday coffee in Princes Street after she had deposited some picture frames she was restoring to the gallery in Dundas Street. I noticed the sleet as I was ready to leave the house but never venture never win they say and so I was on my way.
At the very last moment I had a phone call from her saying please don’t come it’s very slip slidey in town and I don’t think it’s going to be good for either of us walking up or down slopes. With my plans dashed, I slipped along the slush instead to Söderberg for a coffee and I regret to say a cardamom bun heated to perfection in the pasta oven. I was the only customer for as long as I was there, hogging the fan heater.
The sleet turned to snow and I turned for home to sew up Yorkshire Daughter’s cardigan watching the white out behind the window and thanking my lucky stars that I wasn’t having to go anywhere.
Later the daughter phoned to say she was watching the chaos outside the gallery window where buses and cars were sliding on the hilly street. I learned from the news at lunch time that the Lothian buses had been withdrawn from service until the routes are assessed later.
The snow/sleet/rain has stopped and the Meadows look to be thawing. I can see at least two November snowmen and some snowball fights but there are fewer people playing now than there were earlier. There is not a breath of wind - it’s just a dreich, miserable, dank afternoon. Maybe Bert has something else up his sleeve and is biding his time.
