Kiss Me Kate
We were not able to get down to London to see the latest revival of this show at The Barbican, starring Adrian Dunbar and Stephanie J. Block, so were pleased to see that the Brewery Arts Centre were showing a “live” streaming of the production. To add authenticity, we even had an interval!
And very good it was too. Obviously, you don’t get the atmosphere of being in the theatre - and you have to watch what elements the director wants you to see of the performance - but the singing and dancing were excellent and the whole thing was well acted and staged.
The show has a particular resonance for me, as it was the first KAOS production I was Stage Manager for, in 1996. This was back in the days when I preferred being backstage rather than in the glare of the spotlights. And, apart from watching the MGM musical on the telly one Christmas, I’d not seen the show since. All those rehearsals and performances must have stuck in my mind though, as I quickly remembered the songs and the plot.
A most enjoyable evening, albeit not the “real” thing. But when you can’t afford the time - or the ticket price - to travel down to London, it’s definitely better than not seeing it all.
