Happy Birthday Mom
A number of years ago, my sister and I collaborated on a gift for our mom. Kathy wrote a rhyming poem of 29 stanzas, printed it out and sent it to me. I took the copy and added art stamping and drawing around the border of the pages and we framed it. Mom loved it and she hung it up in the dining room.
Recently, Kathy came up with a great idea. For mom's 90th birthday, how about taking turns reading the stanzas of the poem out loud to her? So we did just that! It was really fun to do, kind of like putting on a little play for mom.... a few of the stanzas are below. It's titled: Our Amazing Mom!
"This is the story of our mom's amazing powers.
You will never meet another mom like ours...
If you have a dog you'd like to groom
Or maybe your thinking of redecorating a room...
Or, you could be hankering for a gourmet meal --
In all these situations, our mom's the real deal."
I think Mom truly enjoyed us reading the poem to her. Steve brilliantly thought to take out his phone and take a video of my sister & I reciting the poem. I cherish that he did this because we now have a wonderful recorded memory of mom happily enjoying her special birthday. It is not easy for her living with dementia and there are still a lot of challenges and struggles, for all of us. We didn't even know if she'd be up for the celebration that day, but fortunately everything fell into place and we all enjoyed!
