Flames

I got up at around eight o'clock this morning and went downstairs to make coffees. Looking out of the window, I saw a thick plume of white smoke coming up out of town.

In the six and a half years since I left Facebook, I haven't missed it much, if at all, but I must confess that I called upstairs and asked the Minx to check out the 'We are Kirkby Lonsdale' Facebook group.

It transpired that there was a fire in town and that the fire brigade was originally called out at six in the morning, but by the time we left for Salford around midday there were still fire engines arriving and the smoke was as thick as ever.

We kept an eye on the news over the course of the day, but it seemed to get worse and worse. By this evening, the fire was still going: the buildings in the part of town where the fire had taken hold are densely packed and not easily accessible.
