Spooky
We don't often get starlings at our feeders, but when we do they are extremely spooky and quick to startle. I think this is especially true when there is snow on the ground and my speculation is that they know they are at higher risk for being picked off by a hungry hawk. They are also bullies at the feeders so I am just as glad we don't get them around often. Still, they are beautiful creatures, especially in their winter plumage. Strangely, they winter plumes are much more colorful and vibrant than their breeding colors - which is the opposite of most birds.
We got about an inch of wet snow overnight so as soon as I was up and fueled with tea, I put my hide up and spent some time shooting all the birds that were coming and going. In addition to the starlings, there was also a good crowd of brown-headed cowbirds (see Extra for male with two females) along with all the regulars. I'll put a female cardinal in Extra too - just a fun shot.
After some time in the hide, I came in and had a nice long FT chat with my parents. Mom has a GI appointment this afternoon.
We are going to stay above freezing tonight and warm to the mid 50's tomorrow before plunging back down to sub-freezing later in the week.
Meanwhile, the news in New Jersey seems to be consumed with drone sightings. I've not seen a single one, but then I'm not usually outside a lot at night.
I am reading a really good book right now (recommended by friend and fellow Blipper MaryElizaR) called "All The Colors of the Dark". It's beautifully written and I'm enjoying it very much.
Plain dark today.
