2025 Tuesday — Fuel for Fires

The recent wild fire situation in Southern California has caused us much concern about the amount of fuel for fire that we see in our coastal neighborhood and this little beach town.

The photo of the clump of trees on fire is from Labor Day Monday in 2012. It is a "volunteer" clump of trees that grew on the old golf course land at our former SoCal house. It was a vivid example for us that green trees burn quite well.

This afternoon when I took our dogs for a short walk north on our street to Fourth Street. Those trees are located below Highway #1 on the down slope land that leads to our street. The trees are over grown and contain plenty of dead wood and the scrub beneath would burn easily. Cal Fire tells us that area is CalTrans responsibility and CalTrans tells us they only clear eight feet beyond the guardrails. I think it will take a group of concerned citizens to get the issue resolved. But I do think everyone is thinking about fire prevention.
