A spectacular walk
For Christmas I bought V a little book called 40 Walks in West Sussex and we resolved to do one today. We picked a circuit on National Trust land up to Woolbeding Common. I’ve lived the other side of the A3 for much of my childhood but this side is relatively unknown to me and I’d certainly never been there. The first part of the walk was through slightly marshy paths, past old, Cold Comfort Farms and up to tiny settlements with mossy walls and no new building at all. Then we arrived at Redford a small hamlet that
straddled a bigger road and which our neighbour Rachel, who walked with us, told us had the best garage in the area. It looked as if it was closed in the 1930s but we were assured it was always like that. Coupled with the old post office that was now a house but retained its phone and letterbox it was like stepping back in time. See extra!
Up to the Trig point (pictured) then we looked down over the Weald across
to the North Downs and read up about this area of heathland, a dark sky area which apparently has wonderful sunsets and a huge colony of adders.
The day started sad when we found two blue tits dead on our patio, I think a sparrowhawk must have driven them into the plate glass windows, I hate it when that happens. Particularly as the sparrowhawk didn’t get anything out of it
