Time marches on
Another dull but dry day today. I spent the morning finishing off organising the pictures for the Photo Club tonight. I had a few more come in this morning so we now have 57 for tonight's voting.
I had an email from a friend at 1.15 asking if I was walking down to the Corran Halls for the u3a Science group talk. I thought it was next week! So I had a very quick lunch and we set off. The talk, or one of the talks, was to be about Nobel Prizewinners to do with AI, so I thought it might be interesting. I should have known it would concentrate on the scientific principles behind the eventual transformation of an early idea into what we now know as AI. There was a lively discussion from the floor - there was only a dozen or so there - and I didn't understand a word of it! Why do I go? The second part was about other prizewinners discussing why some countries are rich and others are poor, and again, the floor said more than the speaker! All very interesting, but it wore me out just trying to listen to it all!
Once I'd got away I walked back into town to pick up a prescription and on the way took this picture of the pub on the seafront called 'Coasters'. The building dates from 1871 - it was initially a bank, then a post office and now a pub. If anyone has seen the 1959 Scottish film 'The Bridal Path', then you may remember Bill Travers going into the then Bank of Scotland to take some money out before setting off on a long walk! Then it was an uphill walk for me on the way home. Phew!
Quote of the day: 'Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.' - Stephen Hawking.
