Today's the day ....................... to take part

I've just been listening to a fascinating online talk about the archaeology of an area of Galloway known as the Machars.

Galloway in general is very rich in archaeological remains but this particular coastal area is particularly well-known for the wetland and loch settlements that were built from the early Iron Age, almost 2,500 years ago.  The wet, peaty condition of the land of the Machars  has provided the perfect environment for the preservation of these timber structures - and recent archaeological research into sites here has transformed our knowledge of prehistoric Scotland.

The talk this evening was an introduction for a very exciting new project that will take place over the coming month or so, to investigate a newly-discovered settlement near Whithorn.  I have applied to join in some of the days when they will be surveying and excavating the site in March.

I'm so looking forward to getting my hands dirty - and being part of a proper 'dig' again .......................!
