Calke Abbey

We spent much of today exploring the extensive parkland surrounding Calke Abbey.  This building, now owned by the National Trust, barely survived when so many fine country houses did not.  Although the house itself was not open to visitors today, it has largely been left as the National Trust found it - peeling wallpaper and all.

We enjoyed the gardens - and a lunch in the National Trust cafe.  However it was a very cold day, with light but persistent rain.

This evening we enjoyed a good meal at a pub within walking distance of our accommodation.
