Life through the lens...

Who lived in a house like this?

Who remembers “ Through the Keyhole “.
(Presenters, David Frost and Loyd Grossman. )

This is one of the houses we passed on our walk with the Pudseys today.
I have given it a retro twist which I thought was appropriate.
Starting at Apperley Bridge, on the outskirts of Leeds/Bradford. Up through the woods to Rodley and back along the Leeds Liverpool canal.

Thanks to the wool trade Bradford was once the richest city not just in Yorkshire but Europe.
In 1920 it is said there were more Rolls Royces per head than any town in the world!

So back to this house.
Buckstone Hal, Rawdon, built in 1884 for Herbert Dewhirst a partner in the firm of William Dewhirst & Co. stuff merchants and spinners.
Nick named “ Little Windsor” an “ The Castle “. Grade two listed.
The Dewhirst family lived there until 1911.

Sir Arthur Croft bought the property in 1923. He had an engineering business in Bradford.

The house became a country club and casino in the 1960s.
Now divided into 4 apartments. One sold for £850,000 a while ago.

This area is full of these magnificent houses which is where many of the wealthy Bradfordians lived back in the 19th and 20th centuries.

It was certainly a fascinating walk. Love all the history or the area.
We were lucky with the weather and got back to the car just as the heavens opened.
15C! Certainly felt warm even if no sun.

( looked up the meaning of “ stuff”.
It was a superior cloth made from combed out long staple fibre.. Later became known as ‘ Worsteds’.
