Porto Moniz

Porto Moniz is about 13 miles along the coast from Porta Delgada and is situated at the north-western tip of the island.
It is well-known for the natural group of bathing pools made from the flow of lava - see extra photo.  The black lava outcrops are very visible here and the Laurissilva Forest is nearby up on the mountain.  Madeira is very volcanic and one often sees steps or surfaces made from bricks made out of the lava.

In the third photograph the terraces are very evident. All the houses have little tracts of land for growing their fruit, vegetables, sugar cane, vines and bananas.  Nearer Funchal there are banana palms everywhere - not a patch of earth to be seen!
