Life's Little Moments

Shortie

My friend Giselle has been rehabbing a Short Eared Owl for the last few months and is getting ready to release it in the next week or so. When she asked me if I'd like to get some photos, I leapt at the chance!  They are a winter species for us, but breed north of here in Canada and Alaska so it's time for this one to be on its way.  It is currently in the "flight cage" as the final step to being able to survive in the wild.  It is flying perfectly, executing swift turns in mid air (I wasn't able to get shots because there just wasn't enough room) and eating well.  I was surprised at how small this species actually is - when I see them flying, they look much larger.  I chose a close up because I just love the face and the expressive eyes.  I am definitely a portrait girl when it comes to birds and animals.

Another beautiful day with lots of sun and temps in the high 70's.  The first two daffodils in my garden burst into bloom today which makes me very happy indeed.  Soon, it will be a sea of yellow in the garden.  I also saw my first big fat bumble bee drift over the garden today - a most welcome sight.

Blood draw this morning, uneventful as usual.  I'm lucky that I have easily accessible veins - some don't have it so easy.

Two more shots in Extra - one of the shortie in flight and the other of a Barred owl with its nictitating membrane showing.  The Barred Owl is also going to be released soon.
