Jardi Botanic de Soller.
You have to do it - travel on the historic tram to Soller at least once during your stay. So today we did, to the town/village of Soller just inland from the port.
A pleasant journey in though we were a bit surprised at the cost. As remembered from last time it was mainly through orange and lemon groves. The blip from 2015 is the classic shot of the lovely Iglesias Sant Bartomeo designed by a pupil of Guadi and the tram, on that occasion we had travelled up from Palma on the train.
We couldn’t go in today as it was Sunday and the exhibition in the railway station of works of Jean Miro and Picasso was als closed so we’ll have to go back. But we did take in the little craft market, got some locally made soaps, and had a coffee and shared an Ensaimade (Mallorca breakfast bread) in the square below the church before making our way to the lovely Jardi Botanic.
Not too far and worth the walk apart from the last few yards along the busy bypass which we were warned about.
We were very impressed and particularly liked this area with a huge collection of cacti/succulents. Plants from all over the Mediterranean were represented. There was also a Museum of Natural Sciences on the site. I love the way Soller nestles in the wonderful Tramuntana mountains - extra - taken from the citrus grove in the edible garden
We found a slightly better way back and then headed for the tram back. Absolutely rammed. Lots of tours from Palma getting off the train and onto the tram. ( I’m not really blaming the cruise ships!) It certainly seems much busier than 10 years ago. I think we’ll use the bus tomorrow.
We enjoyed it nevertheless as it’s a lovely place. In the extra you can see the village in the sun in a gap between the mountains taken from our hotel balcony this evening. It was a bit more sheltered there today especially in the gardens as despite the sun all day there’s been a sneaky wind which was more noticeable here on the coast.
We still managed a drink and a bocadillo opposite our hotel by the marina sitting in the sun when we gut off the tram. These places will get a lot of business from the tram visitors and it adds a nice historic touch and ambience to the area.
It was a late afternoon lunch, the sandwiches were huge, which I hope will do us as eating three courses two nights running is a bit much, especially with all that fizz!
We had a lovely evening at the family restaurant last night and as predicted it was full of Spanish families particularly after 9.00 pm. Chris really wanted Paella, not my favourite but it was for two so we shared, I suppose that’s what gets you through 50 years!
Thank you all so much for your kind wishes and hearts for yesterday, you really are a lovely lot. We had a great celebratory day and aren’t we lucky we get to celebrate for the rest of the week too.
We’ve done over 15,000 steps today so might have an evening in with no more eating!
Forgot to add this yesterday my only archive blip taken in 1975!
