Last Evening, Today and in the Days Ahead

If you read my journal yesterday, I mentioned we were finished with work early in the evening. Little did I know that was a false assumption. For some reason, hubby went to the basement. He was back in a minute saying his shop was flooded. Oh my! We had up to .5 inch on the floor in places but the entire floor and corner shelving areas were soaked. The cardboard boxes that were on the empty shelves in my photo, and some of their contents, were saturated. Even all my old vinyl records were soaked. See my extra from last night’s fiasco. Wanted to include it as a memory. I guess there was enough water left in the line to the outside spigot at some point during the winter that froze and caused a rupture. We used the garden hose yesterday for the first time since winter to water new plants and fill a fountain. I actually noticed the water pressure was lower than normal but attributed it to a crink I found in the hose. I sent out a distress call to the family as soon as I got downstairs. There were boxes too heavy for us to lift. Jamie came by as soon as he got off from work. He spent hours, dressed in his office attire, using our shop wet/dry vac to suck up the water. Parker arrived right after lacrosse practice with fans to help dry the area. He lifted all the heavy boxes while I moved the lumber and hubby carried other items out of the room. We worked until 9:00 pm. Three of Parker’s teammates stopped by as soon as they could. We’d moved most of the drenched items but they put all the ruined stuff in the back of hubby’s truck. Other family members offered to come help but we figured we had enough volunteers. Renee had pizzas, brownies and Sprite delivered from Dominoes. The boys were surely appreciative of dinner; practice and helping us gave them a hearty appetite. This morning, my sister and BIL stopped by to repair the broken line. He needs another tool so he will come back tomorrow to finish. My sister checked the seed packs I am keeping for her in the basement and the basil is already up. She removed the lid of the mini greenhouse and I will make sure they don’t dry out. We are so blessed to have a caring and helpful family. After the shelving and stored items are completely dry, we will use waterproof containers to put the salvageable stuff back where it belongs. This hiccup gives us the incentive to clean the basement. My knees took a beating being on the concrete floor so long. I had almost 14,000 steps. I ironed my clothes, changed and washed our linens and straightened up anything out of place this morning. Otherwise, I have rested my legs. Hubby picked up my meds, bought groceries and took the ruined boxes, etc to the convenience center. After lunch, he cut the insulation sheets in the flooded area and left them to dry. Being away from the concrete walls should ensure it won’t mold. He then left for Right to Life event in Annapolis. There was no way my knees could stand so long. So, I am back on the recliner and I THINK I am finished for the evening. Wishing you no hard to deal with surprises. Stay safe. Thanks for all your stars, hearts and nice compliments lately. “In helping others, we shall help ourselves, for whatever good we give out completes the circle and comes back to us.” - Flora Edwards
