Stained glass bonanza
Apart from holy wells we also had stained glass and churches on the agenda for our Kerry trip as Finola is writing a book on two lesser well known but incredibly talented stained glass artists - George Steven Walsh and his son George Walsh.
What is really astonishing is you can find yourself in the middle of nowhere in a tiny village and there will be an incredibly modern church - go inside and a blaze of colour and creativity will be revealed, so unexpected. This glass is from Abbeydorney, a 1970s building with an extraordinary ship-like roof. Apologies for the rather dark pic of the exterior. This vibrant glass was put in in 2001.
The church she really wanted to see was built in 1966 and is almost brutalist in its purity and simplicity (quote!) and was designed by someone famous - quite why here in Knockanure is hard to fathom. See Himself strolling past the large frontal facade.
And Finola has whipped up a blog about this intriguing site.
We were also lured into St Michael's Church Lixnaw and admired the dramatic rendition of the saint slaying the dragon. All good stuff!
