Out on the water

First day of our sea kayaking trip.
After kit prep and a briefing we headed out from Marahau up the coast in the Abel Tasman park.
The sea was perfectly calm so a great start and easy paddling out to the islands. The rocky coast line of the islands was popular with fur seals. They lounged around on the rocks and the pups bobbed around in the sea. Some were very inquisitive, keen to check us out.
From the islands we paddled back across to the coast calling in at several bays and our final stop which was Observation Beach. This had a camping area (room for 10 tents), a tap and a long drop toilet. There were only 2 other tents there with us, so very peaceful. But we didn’t account for the wekas - these birds are very sneaky thieves and we had been warned. But Within 5 minutes of starting to unpack our boat 2 bananas went missing, then the map was stolen (I did chase that one down), and a box of matches disappeared.
Apparently they like to collect things in their burrow and then have a sort through later to see what’s interesting/edible! I’m sure the bananas will go down well but not so sure about the matches. Pesky birds.
