Sleepwalk
It’s been a long, and tiring, day today. Set off straight after breakfast and headed to North Wales to meet with mum’s financial adviser. I’m now registered to act on her behalf and we’re going to try and cut down on the amount of paperwork currently generated, and shift it online. Her adviser specialises in looking after funds for people in the care system and he gave me a lot of good advice and useful tips over the course of our meeting.
Then it was on to Chester to see my sister’s new flat. She only moved last Friday, just beating the rise in Stamp Duty, and we were the first visitors! Still got some furniture issues - old settee wouldn’t fit through door and new bed frame was damaged before delivery - but it looked pretty good for them only being in less than a week!
Then it was back up the motorway - in rush hour traffic unfortunately - but only as far as Lancaster as we were seeing The Shires in concert at The Grand. Arrived in good time so we were able to treat ourselves to a proper tea before the concert. The support act were okay - not really upbeat enough for my tastes, though a rousing rendition of “Johnny B Goode” to end their set certainly hit the spot.
The Shires were very good. We’ve seen them several times in the past and liked their “British Country” style. But then they went to America and I felt their music had gone a little more “Nashville”, thus losing its uniqueness. Add in a pandemic and them starting families, and it’s not hard to see why they dropped off my radar for a few years.
But now they’re back, with an acoustic show and some new takes on old numbers. First time they’d played Lancaster as well. Given the rousing reception they received, I hope they’ll return at some point and treat us to more of their fantastic voices.
However, we’ve now been away from home for over 12 hours, I’m dying for a cup of tea and I’m very tired - hence the song of theirs that I’ve chosen for today’s title!
More of the same tomorrow…
