It has been a terribly wet cold day, with a dusting of snow on the hills around the farm and township. We have had such a mild few months, however the powers to be above have decided that they are going to have one last crack at winter before spring arrives.

Poor Farmerboy had a gruesome day. Out in the pouring cold rain this morning, he noticed a cow having trouble calving. After a lot of effort to get the cow contained in the yards, he spent the next 45 minutes trying to calve her. Unfortunately the calf's head was twisted the wrong way, which made it impossible to pull the calf out. The calf had died, probably sometime overnight.

Time to call the vet in. She too had no luck in pulling it out, so in the end she had to saw the head off the calf while it was inside the cow. How gruesome! The cow survived, but I'm sure the experience of her first time calving will always be with her!
