Boys and their toys

On our way to Loch Garten to see how the young ospreys were doing we stopped at Boat of Garten just in time to see the steam train arriving at the platform. We dashed over the bridge to watch as it came to a halt, then as the engine was uncoupled and moved up the line to collect a load more coal before being reunited with the carriages before setting off on its journey to Aviemore. The boys - and their Dad - were all fascinated until the engine gave a whoosh of steam which scared the wits out of them!!

The two young ospreys are doing well and will fly from their Scottish roost to the deserts of west Africa very shortly. Migration of young birds never ceases to amaze me and now that these birds have been fitted with tags it is possible to follow their flight as it happens.

The day finished with a visit to the local fishery lochans where you could hire rods to fish for trout. Great fun was had and eventually the boys managed to land one medium fish which we were able to taste later that evening.
