Bayerisch Eisenstein, Germany
Yesterday we travelled the width and almost the length of Germany en route from Omnen in The Netherlands to Bayerisch Eisentein on the German/Czech border.
It was a long day but surprising less difficult than we imagined it might be, mainly thanks to multiple episodes of The Yogi Bear Show to entertain the boys, an audiobook of the Hobbit and several stops at fantastic German service stations (we became quite partial to the special summer schnitzel which came with a free mini football).
We had left the campsite by just after 10, were in Germany in just over an hour ( noticing immediately the changes in landscape, even the differing roadside vegetation as well as the different cars on the road), and arrived at the holiday cottage my parents were staying in by 9pm.
We woke to be greeted by a lovely breakfast and an abundant supply of cherries on the tree within reach of the balcony and then my mum took the older boys out for an explore. They were only gone about half an hour when we got a text to say they were in another country, having nipped over the border into the Czech Republic.
We spent the morning and early afternoon in the beautiful bavarian town, and had our first apfelkutchen and strudel of the holidays, before saying goodbye and heading onwards south into Austria and up up up high into the hills to our ski chalet for the night.
(Thanks to my mum and dad and G & R for allowing us to gate crash your holiday!)
