Seydisfjordur is a small village in the Eastfjord.

Today’s trip was to Skalanes Nature & Heritage Reserve which is situated in a restored farmhouse. We were transported in an “odd” looking vehicle which had a lorry bottom half and a bus top half. It was built to transport visitors over the rough terrain and through three rivers, a 45 minute journey.

Snow-capped mountains, vast sea cliffs, secluded beaches and vibrant meadows bounded by the sea make Skalanes an ideal place to study the environment of East Iceland.

We were given refreshments and I had the chance to taste smoked minke whale (tastes like fresh tuna) and skyr (Icelandic yoghurt).

The chap sitting next to me ate the toppings off the sandwiches and left the bread (which looked like brown cardboard, but tasted really good). I made palls with the resident dog and fed him the leftovers. He was obviously well practiced (or trained) as he took the pieces from my finders so gently and even gave my fingers a wash to remove every last morsel. He must be a real favourite with the researchers and visitors!!
