Flight from Tasilaq to Kulusuk

Back up in the helicopter for the flight back to Kulusuk.

Today was rather windy - there is a tendency for piteraq winds to howl down off the Greenland icecap. These are katabatic winds of dry, cold dense air that roll down off the cold ice shelf and can reach hurricane speeds in the winter. As you might imagine the wind chill off these winds can be severe. Today however, with the warm sun it was pleasant enough.

The heicopter had no problem dealing with the constant wind - it just flies rather sideways. But the pilot did fly us round the coast rather than over the ridgetops to avoid the turbulent air. So we got some great views of icebergs and the fjords.
