Day 32 – St Johns, Newfoundland

St John’s is a bit of a change from the small villages we have been staying in up until now. It’s a fairly big place with lots of people and overly expensive restaurants!

We spent a full day here sightseeing in the area. We went to Cape Spear which is the most easterly point in North America and visited ‘The Rooms’ which is a huge museum / exhibition centre on the hills in St John’s looking over the harbour.

Our last sight for the day was Signal Hill, on top of which is Cabot Tower. The tower was formerly occupied by the Marconi Company and was the site at which the first trans-Atlantic signal was received, from Cornwall in England. Signal Hill was fortified during WWII and on the opposite side of the entrance to St John’s Harbour another fortification was built, called Fort Amhurst. It meant the harbour was extremely well protected.

Today’s photo was taken from Signal Hill looking over the harbour and the city of St John’s sprawling up the hill. As you can see, we had beautiful weather again!
