Day 42 – Halifax Citadel, Nova Scotia

The Halifax Citadel is a large fortification with a large building in its centre, which has three floors. The site includes many displays and various museums which alone mean you could spend hours there. This coupled with the staff on site and a band of re-enactors who give guided tours, carry out drills (e.g changing of the guard), demonstrate firing rifles and at noon everyday (bar Christmas Day) fire a large canon placed up on the walls. The re-enactors are clearly fans and do the job in no small part due to their great personal interest in history and looking smart in an 18th century uniform! The soldier at the front is Private Hardy, a woman! Of course, back in the 18th century women were not allowed to be soldiers.
