Purple Swamphens
Today we birded two areas not far from our hotel in Tavira, Portugal (northeast along the coast toward Faro, where we arrived yesterday.
We found several Purple Swamphens (Porphyrio porphyrio) in a marsh along a golf course. Apparently the nearly identical American Purple Gallinule is a separate species.
This as well as the other area we visited had terrific birds. The two standouts here (less well photographable were a water rail and two little bitterns.
Again it's late, so to bed.
