boston 'green' festival
in continuing my getting-to-know boston stint, i headed to gov't center on saturday to check out the green fest that i only accidentally heard about through (horror of all horrors) facebook. the weather was stunning - a festive blue sky greeting me before the sea of white tents set up just outside the t stop. i took my time, meandering from table to table, chatting with random people and signing up for emails here and there. some of my favorite tables were those covered in art prints or jewelry or clothing designs or ceramics and sculptures. i wanted to take it all home to make my home green...and brown and white and red and deep eggplant purple...
the fest was smaller than i envisioned, but fun nonetheless. i envied the friends and couples i spotted together, laughing or debating. i felt a bit alone and yet not alone. i still found many enthusiasts with whom, earnestly concerned or with a fleeting interest in advertising's newest victim, i exchanged enthusiastic encouragement or just simple pleasantries.
something in me wonders if events like this are for real - if they're helpful or just swept up in the whirlwind of 'green' pr stunts that aren't really helping anything or anyone. some of the people and sponsors are so wonderful and enthusiastic and wholeheartedly contributing to a better, more sustainable world (as far as i can tell). and then some are clearly just along for the ride. i'm not sure i buy the 'well, as long as we're doing something' argument. i think we need to do much much more.
who's with me? :)
