Miners in Bronze
Today I was in Hamilton in South Lanarkshire. As I headed for the station I passed this striking bronze sculpture of two miners standing outside Brandon Gate council offices.
The Udston mining disaster occurred on 28 May 1887 when 73 miners died in a firedamp explosion. It is thought this was caused by unauthorised shot and is said to be one of Scotland's worst coal mining disasters.
As I photographed the sculptures some employees I imagine, emerged from the building. I liked the juxtaposition of the woman in grey with the miners - similarity of colours but quite a different mood. Life goes on – Friday afternoon and the weekend beckoning.
