Welsh Mining Tragedy

Today I popped over to Senghenydd in the Aber Valley, near Caerphilly to visit the newly opened Wales National Mining Memorial. It was 100 years ago last week that 439miners and 1 rescuer lost their lives in the terrible disaster that happened in the Universal Colliery in Senghenydd. This became Britain's worst ever mining disaster. I found it quite moving reading all the names of the miners on each individual plaque surrounding the monument. Some as young as 14, dying alongside their brother or father, grandfather or uncle. Such an incomprehensible tragedy that could've so easily been avoided. There were some elderly people from the local area wandering around, also reading the plaques like myself. Some of them were chatting about relatives they had tragically lost too.
