Tuesday 5 November 2013 - Recalling a Past Event
I've been reading a book obtained whilst on holiday earlier this year called Newbury Road By Road. This is almost a complete history of this Berkshire town through it's street names. So, inspired by this excellent book and it being Bonfire Night, it seemed appropriate to include a name of a street in my own village of Billingshurst. Mill Way began life as a trackway leading out over fields from the High Street. It became a made up street when houses were built there soon after World War II. However, the name recalls a windmill that once stood nearby that was burnt down on the night of 5 November 1852.... Despite the date, there's no known connection between the two events!!
