A Twittering of Twite?
The day started beautifully. Totally calm. Blue sky and a huge frost with ice on some quite large stretches of water. "I don't like Summer - these are the best days" was the comment from the gent I chatted to at the bottle bank - as one does - and he is right. At least I thought that was what he said but I think there was a fair bit of Glaswegian in it so anything could have been said.
Yesterday evening I got a text to say a Gyr had been seen at Balemore at midday so off I went this morning to see if I could find it. It turned out to be a wild Gyr chase but nevertheless was a stunning walk. I suspect it will be the first such wild Gyr chase of many as they range a long way in a day.
A Sparrowhawk was roosting by the car and a Sea Eagle flew over as I started down the track to the machair. I then came across a group of about 300 Twite some of which are above. Pretty little things and usually described as having a curry coloured face. Presumably a madras rather than a korma to look at them.
I love collective nouns for birds but couldn't find one for Twite but reckoned it should be a Twittering of Twite because that is what they do. I am happy to be corrected by someone who knows better.
At the end of the walk I had to paddle ankle deep (in less than ankle high footwear) through some puddles to get back to the car and almost trod on a Jack Snipe. A great bird to end an excellent day.
