What's In A Street Name 2?
Probably not the most exciting image for today, but like the Mill Way road nameplate, this Horsham street name also has a little history to it. Depot Road is a busy straight residential road on the NE side of the town. During the Napoleonic Wars in 1804, an ordnance depot was established to hold 10,000 stands of arms as they were referred to, on common land on the NE side of the town. This common land was enclosed in 1812-13 when the depot area was increased. However, with the conflict over and Napoleon exiled, it closed in 1819 and the buildings were gradually demolished. With the last vestiges of the old depot cleared in 1947, this road which passed the site lives on as a reminder of what there once was.
