Mothers' Union Banner, All Saints Church, Roffey

I had already thought I had taken a picture for today, but on the off chance Roffey Church was open, I decided to go that way home and found the sandwich board was still outside with the words "church open". So in I went and chose this colourful banner as today's picture. The Mothers' Union is a Christian charity that seeks to support families wordwide, especially in times of adversity. It was founded in 1876, two years before this church was built by Mary Sumner, wife of the rector of Old Alresford in Hampshire. A Mothers' Union banner can often be seen in many Anglican churches and they are often of very high quality workmanship and usually depict as here, Mary and the Christ Child. Textiles and needlework add much colour, symbolism and interest to all our church interiors and reveal the great skills of those in the community both in the past and the present.
