Where does the path go?

Towards Horsham! This track goes westward to Horsham from Mannings Heath and runs along the southern edge of the wood and descends to cross the bay (local dialect wood for a dam) of Roosthole Pond. The wood is called Alder Wood, a part of St Leonards Forest and was marked on the 1841 Tithe Map of Nuthurst Parish as Roosthole Coppice. This was in spite of the fact that the schedule that goes with the map referred to it as Alder Wood. In 1841 this wood was part of nearby Mill Farm and was owned by the local squire, Robert Aldridge who lived at St Leonards Park House (now converted into apartments). The map schedule usually lists the occupier as well as the owner. James Pronger who farmed Mill Farm was listed as occupier and his wood covered an area of 24acres, 3rods and 10 perches.
