Ten years
This little face was waiting for me at the nursery door tonight. Talk about breaking my heart!! I still hate the nursery thing. I know its necessary but I just wish there was another way. Look at that face!! Makes me want to sob.
Today was the 10 year anniversary of my company. 10 years ago today I set up my own PR business, left the rat race and went self employed. And I haven't look back since.
On the plus side, working for yourself is incredibly empowering. You can chose your hours, you don't have to commute (brilliant in winter), you decide who you want to work with and you know when the money comes in, it's all yours and not being siphoned by a big organisation.
The downsides have been more apparent for me lately. No maternity pay, the fact that you can't really ever take a break (I even checked my email in hospital just after I'd given birth!), the uncertainty over your future and finances and sometimes a feeling of loneliness.
But all this considered, it was still the best decision I ever made and I'm so proud of what I've achieved in the past decade (especially considering the hurdles).
Celebrated with a chippy tea with Audrey (quite cute - her in her highchair facing me at the kitchen table).
Angus has to work all weekend as he has a poorly restaurant manager, so looks like it will be just me and my buddy for the next two days. At least I don't have to leave her at nursery, hooray!!!
