Wow!

Our last day in London was enjoyed in the British Museum. There was so. much. to. see. We couldn't possibly see it all, so we left some for a future visit. :)

The things to see start right at the gates and in the exterior building architecture. Inside, the architecture was also impressive, as was the collection. We saw money and clocks and I got lost in the Chinese ceramics collection. History and artifacts from the Egyptians, Greeks, Italians, British, Americans, Africans, Romans, and...

I liked this photo of the pediment at the south entrance, with the fabulous blue sky. The British Museum has been open to the public since 1759, other than closures during the two world wars. It moved to this Greek revival style building, which was constructed in the 1850s. Typical of the architectural style, there is a pediment above the entrance. The sculptures in the pediment, originally white with a wedgewood blue background, were intended to show what the museum was about, "The Progress of Civilisation." I think that the architecture and pediment really do capture the essence of the museum.
